Popular Tampon and Period Myths: DEBUNKED

debunking popular tampon and period myths

This one goes out to all of my ladies! Sorry fellas, but ovaries before brovaries for today. Let’s talk periods- and specifically, how we deal with them. I didn’t get my period until a couple of months before 9th grade, so I was kind of a late bloomer amongst my friend group. Because of this, I built up a few fears about periods because I had never experienced one. Would it hurt using tampons? Would I automatically become moody and want to curse at the heavens every 28 days (surprise: I would).

My school almost taught the opposite of sex education by trying to avoid the topic entirely. I went to a private Christian high school where I sincerely believe the teachers felt like they would burst into flames just by saying the word vagina. I remember one week, we had a school-wide assembly and I met with a friend once it was over. She commented on how she had to go to the bathroom during the entire meeting but just held it. “I should’ve just gone while we were in the gym,” she commented. Confused, I asked her if she meant in the restrooms in the lobby. Instead, she replied in a completely serious tone, “Nope. I have a tampon in so I’m good.” She truly thought that she could relieve herself while using a tampon and be ok!

Even as the child of healthcare professionals, I had trouble talking to my parents about sex ed from time to time. I can’t imagine students who don’t have that kind of information from either school or their home life! Thankfully, I’m partnering with Tampax to debunk some of the biggest mysteries when it comes to tampon usage.

Tampons or pads? The good news is that it’s all up to you! I also had a couple of friends who exclusively used pads because they thought it would “take away your virginity” (can you tell I went to a conservative school?). Let’s clear that myth up right now. The hymen, the thin membrane at the opening of your vagina, could tear if you’re a dancer, horseback rider, or from a variety of other activities. It has nothing to do with how sexually active you are. The average woman shouldn’t have a problem with them tearing if you’re using a tampon.

While I never fell for the virginity myth, I was still too scared to use one! I’m even embarrassed to share how long it took me ditch my pads for tampons. Cheerleading in high school could’ve been sooo much easier if I had converted sooner. They’re more convenient to carry (Seriously. I love how compact the pocket pearl design is!) and I’ve found more effective in usage.

Can I wear one to sleep?

Well, this one is tricky. You’re supposed to change them out every 6-8 hours. Additionally, you should be monitoring it between that time period just in case you need to change. The best practice would be to put in a new one right before you sleep. I’d suggest using a pad instead just so you wouldn’t have to worry!

Do they hurt?

This was the ultimate question for 14-year-old me. I’m happy to report that they do not! If they hurt, there’s a good chance you’re not doing it correctly. Just remember: Take a deep breath and relax. It’s a lot easier when you’re not as tense! As long as you start off with a brand you trust like Tampax and a size that’s comfortable, there should be no problem.
